The Great Debate

Hi Newport Church Family,

We trust that you are well and in good heart and spirit!

Here are some thoughts that I have been pondering and meditating upon this week. I believe that they are Holy Spirit inspired and I pray that they will resonate in your heart as they have in mine.

The Great Debate 

When Jesus began to proclaim the good news of the Kingdom, to set the captives free, to heal the broken hearted and declare God’s favor, the world of the religious was turned upside down.

Everything that Jesus did was different, unpredictable and for many He often posed more questions than He answered.

It seems that wherever Jesus went a debate would follow, and hard on the heels of the debate would come division.

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man Jesus is not from God, for he is working on the Sabbath.” Others said, “But how could an ordinary sinner do such miraculous signs?” So there was a deep division of opinion among them. John 9:16 NLT

 

 Debate and Division

After Jesus’ resurrection and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit the newly birthed church had to navigate many issues that created significant debate and division.

Two of biggest issues were whether non Jewish believers should be circumcised and whether followers of Christ should observe all of the Old Covenant laws and rituals including the Jewish Sabbath.

These issues created great debate and significant divisions in the church. 

Factions developed between the circumcision party and those who like Paul believed that circumcision of the heart was the seal of the New Covenant.

The debate between those who wanted the Jewish laws and traditions upheld and those who believed these were fulfilled in the finished work of Christ continued to create divisions in the church for many years.

Law and Grace 

The great debate became one between Law and Grace. Those who wanted Jewish religious Law upheld and those who embraced newfound Grace in Jesus.

This debate raged for twenty years until one day, while praying on his roof, Peter had a vision of a sheet being lowered from heaven filled with animals that were unclean according to Jewish law.

God said to Peter, “arise, eat!” and Peter responded, “Lord I have never eaten any unclean food like this,” yet God told him, “what I have cleansed you must not call unclean.”

At the same time two men, sent by Cornelius a Centurion in the Roman army, stood knocking at his door, looking for Peter in order to take him to Cornelius.

Peter went with them to Cornelius’ house, broke his Jewish traditions by entering a non-Jewish household, and preached the gospel to him.

The result was that Cornelius and all his household were saved, filled with the Holy Spirit and the door of salvation to non-Jewish people was flung open.

 

Vision and Division

Peter’s Vision was the key to breaking down the diving wall of division that had come out of the great debate.

When Peter told the leadership of the church in Jerusalem what had happened, they said, “now we see that God makes no distinction between Jew and non-Jew,” and the question that had created so much debate and division was answered with finality. 

 

Grace and Unity

 When it came to communicating this new revelation to the church at large, the key themes were Grace and Unity.

It was grace that brought unity where previously there were divisions, and the unity of believers was the Apostles ultimate goal, bringing the church together as one under the Lordship of Christ

Wherever there is debate and wherever there is division, Grace and Unity are the keys that open the door to God’s favor and blessing.

 

Looking through the Lens of Grace and Unity

As we navigate the issues that have been at the forefront of debate and division in our nation and around the world during the last eighteen months, this story gives us pattern for walking in God’s favor and blessing and clear direction on how to approach every debate with grace and unity.

Being a Christian does not mean that we agree on every issue, but it does mean that we should look at every issue through the lens of Grace and Unity.

Jesus said that the enemy came to kill, steal and destroy, and one of his main strategies is to divide so that he can conquer.

Paul said that as a follower and servant of Christ he was not ignorant of the enemies devices, and we should not be ignorant of them either. 

Division is more deadly than any disease, and disunity more fatal than any disagreement.

Our unity as believers in Christ is more important than our opinions, and grace is the key to navigating life together although when we may not agree on every issue.

Let’s never forget that in His final prayer to His Father before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed:

“Father, I pray that they may be one, even as You and I are one”

We can only be one in Christ when look at every issue through the same lens that Jesus did when He was praying in earnest for each one of us. And that lens is one of  Grace and Unity.

Whether it’s how we respond to the COVID pandemic as a nation, community or church, our position on vaccination, our political views, or our response to the racial issues in our world, its only through the Grace of God and the Unity of His church that Gods Kingdom will come and His will be done.

As St Francis of Assisi wrote:

 

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring love.
Where there is offence, let me bring pardon.
Where there is discord, let me bring union.
Where there is error, let me bring truth.
Where there is doubt, let me bring faith.
Where there is despair, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, let me bring your light.
Where there is sadness, let me bring joy.
O Master, let me not seek as much
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
for it is in giving that one receives,
it is in self-forgetting that one finds,
it is in pardoning that one is pardoned,
it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.

 

And let’s take special note of the words of Paul in Ephesians 4:3:

Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

 

We may differ in our opinions, we may be on different sides of a debate but let’s be one in our priority and passion to see Gods Kingdom come and His will be done!

The Firsts

Hi Newport Church Family,


We are praying that you experience God’s grace, favor and blessing in ever greater ways each new day.

 

The First Day

Tomorrow is the first day of August and we will be taking communion together as a church. This has always been an important Sunday for us as a church, and it’s not coincidental that we break bread together on the first Sunday of the month!

Jesus rose from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week. We honor God by worshipping Him, as a community of faith, on the first day of the week as the church has done for the last 2,000 years.

On the first day of Creation God separated light from darkness. On the first day of the first month the waters from the flood began to recede. On the first day of the first month the Tabernacle, where God manifested His Presence was set up so that the people could meet with God.

 

The First Principle

All that took place on the first day is profoundly significant, not only for it’s own time but also for our time and for our lives. Living in the light rather than darkness, receiving resurrection life and power, experiencing God’s grace instead of judgement and knowing God’s presence are a result of what took place on the first day, and are also a result of what we put first in our lives.

The first principle, which runs through every page of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, reveals that whatever we put first determines the shape of our lives.

What we put first determines our priorities, our practices and our principles.

Whatever is first in our life determines what comes next in life, the quality of our life, the shape and scope of our future and whether we fulfil our God given potential and destiny or not.

 

The First Fruits

God teaches us in His Word that the first of all that we receive from Him belongs to Him, and that when we honor God with the first of our finance, He will honor His word and bless us.

Solomon wrote:

 

Honor the Lord with your wealth
And with the first fruits of all your crops (income);
Then your barns will be abundantly filled
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

Proverbs 3:9-10

 

Solomon’s father David summed up this powerful principle as he and the people of Israel brought their offerings to build the Temple.

Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength.

 

Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us! 

1 Chronicle 29:12.14 NLT

 

Our First Priority 

As we navigate the second half of this year lets’ do all that we can to align our priorities with God’s priorities. Let’s put first what God puts first, and watch how God will bless us and our church as we do!

Jesus said:

 

Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 

Matt 6:33 NKJV

 

Jesus teaches us that His Kingdom priorities add to the quality and blessing of our lives. They never compete with our family, friends or with enjoying the abundant life Jesus promises us. They only add to the blessing because we are living our lives according to the pattern of God’s Word.

 

Baptisms at the Beach and Summer Serve Day

Next Saturday August 7th we have baptisms at the beach and if you would like to be baptized we would love to connect with you. If you have not been baptized in water yet, this is a very important step in your journey of faith and we encourage you to take this next step.

Jesus was baptized Himself, and as we are immersed in the waters of baptism we follow His example. Just as Jesus was later buried and raised from the dead, so our old sinful life is buried in the waters of baptism so that we can rise up out of the water into newness of life!

Rest and Restoration

Hi Newport Church Family,


We trust you had a hope and faith filled week!

Last Sunday we celebrated our 15th Birthday as a church and were able to pause and reflect on God’s faithfulness over the last fifteen years, while looking ahead with anticipation and faith for all that lies ahead.

 

Rest and Restoration

My message last Sunday on Rest and Restoration explored the patterns, cycles, and sequences through which God brings about His Divine purposes, and especially the significance of the number fifteen in those cycles.

Solomon wrote:

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter,

But the glory of kings is to search out a matter

Proverbs 25:2 NKJV 

John writes in the book of Revelation that God has made each one of us kings and priests, with all of the authority of kings and all of the access that priests had to God.

This means that it is our privilege to search out the deeper meaning of all that God says, and to receive insight and understanding into what God is doing at this present time.

Fifteen is the number Rest and Restoration in the Bible and both Rest and Restoration are integral parts of God’s purpose. As we emerge out of this unprecedented season, Rest and Restoration are especially significant.

We all need Rest and we all need Restoration.

Isaiah says, “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall.”

It is only God who never tires and never gets weary, but Isaiah goes on to say,

“those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Let’s enter this next season from a place of rest, as we spend time in God’s presence, and experience the lift of His Spirit. Then we will run and not be weary, walk and not faint!

God not only promises Rest for each one of us but also Restoration. God is a restorer and desires is to restore to us all that has been lost. When God restores He promises to restore to us double that which has been lost.

On the return of the Jewish people after seventy years of captivity God said to Zechariah:

 

Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.

Zech 9:12

 

Let’s enter this new season with a spirit of faith and expectation that God will restore to us double what has been lost.

This is His promise, and it’s for each one of us. A promise that is not based on us having earned God’s favor, but based on who God is, and His faithfulness to all of us who call on the name of Jesus!

Let’s declare this as a season of Rest and Restoration for us personally, our families, our church and our community!

Community, Connection and Cause

Hi Newport Church Family,


Happy Fifteenth Birthday!

Fifteen years ago on Saturday 15th July 2006 our family boarded a flight in Sydney, bound for Los Angeles, with one purpose in mind.

Our vision and our mission was to plant a life giving church in the Newport Beach area of Orange County that would impact our city and beyond, connecting people to Christ, to life giving relationships and to their God given purpose and destiny.

 

Community, Connection and Cause

The very next day we held our first Sunday gathering at 2601 PCH, Newport Beach. What began as an inspirational vision meeting transitioned into what in reality became our first service, only 24 hours after our arrival!

Fifteen years ago there were no Iphones nor Instragram. Facebook was in it’s very early stages and social media was largely limited to Myspace.

Those who were invited, or came to that first meeting, came either by personal invitation, by word of mouth, by text or by visiting our website.

101 people came to that meeting, Brooke Fraser led us in singing “None but Jesus,” I spoke on the three pillars of our vision, Community, Connection and Cause, Christine Caine spoke on Vision and Generosity and three people made decisions to accept Christ as their Savior!

Our church was birthed, out of a visionary information evening that turned into our first church service!

It was as if our original plan for the gathering could not hold back the Spirit of worship and passion for God’s word that was present in the meeting!

The three highlights of that first service which have remained central to our vision ever since were:

 

Passionate Worship

Passionate worship that brings us into the Presence of God, has always been an expression of who we are as a church. We chose “None but Jesus” as the first song that we sang as a church because we want Jesus to be at the Center of all that we do!

Passion for God’s Word  

God’s Word and our passion to share Jesus’ words of life have always been central to our vision and mission. Just as God framed the worlds by the word of His mouth, so we are passionate about framing our world with the words of God’s mouth until His Kingdom comes and His will is done on earth as it is in heaven.

 

Passion for Salvation and Generosity

When Jesus visited Zacchaeus’ house, his life was dramatically transformed. Jesus said, “today salvation has come to this house, for the Son of Man came to seek and to save those that are lost”

Jesus expressed simply and clearly the purpose of His mission and Zacchaeus’ response to the gift of salvation was an outpouring of generosity. He said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

Salvation and Generosity are at the heart of the Gospel and we are passionate about building a house of salvation out of which will flow a life giving stream of generosity.

That evening the three people who received Christ as their Savior were the first of many thousands to experience our church as a house of salvation and the seed that was sown in that first offering primed the pump for a flow of generosity that has followed ever since.

 

Fifteen is the Number of Rest and Restoration

This Sunday as we will celebrate fifteen years of Newport Church we are so thankful for all of those, who over the years have partnered with us in bringing God’s love, grace and hope to countless thousands. Without you, and the work of the Holy Spirit in and through you, we would never have been able to achieve what we have so far.

It is significant that in the Bible, fifteen is the number of Rest and Restoration.

As we celebrate our fifteenth birthday, I believe that these two words are not only significant but prophetic for our church.

Rest and Restoration are the platform upon which we stand as we look forward to the next fifteen years.

This Sunday I will be speaking about Rest and Restoration and we pray that you will be inspired and encouraged in our time together and leave full of hope and faith. 

Make sure you come early for a free coffee and for some birthday cake after the service!

We can’t wait to see you either online or in person.

Well done Good and Faithful Servant!

Hi Newport Church Family,


We trust that you are in good health and spirit and had a great Fourth of July weekend with church, family and friends.

 

Well done Good and Faithful Servant!

This Sunday I will be speaking on how we are all beneficiaries of the Faith, Resource and Experience of the generations who have gone before us.

We are not only beneficiaries of the riches of our inheritance in Christ but we also have a rich legacy that has been left to us by previous generations.

Jesus poses the question in the parable of the talents, “what will you do with what has been entrusted to you?”

How we answer this question determines the outcomes of our lives.

Our fruitfulness, our contribution to our world, the legacy we leave to our children and the generations to come is all determined by what we do with what God has entrusted to us.

Our focus will be how all of us are beneficiaries of the experience of those who have walked before us, and how we all have experience in life that we can share with and invest in others.

All of us have the opportunity to serve our generation and the generations to come as use the talents that God has given to us.

In Jesus’ parable, those who used and invested their talents heard the words, “well done good and faithful servant!”

Jesus went on to say, “ Those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”

As we navigate all of ups and downs, and unexpected twist and turns of life, let’s be a people who value the legacy that has been left to us and invest in others so that we become benefactors that pave the way for them. 

When we do we will hear the words of Jesus:

 

 ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.’

 

Investing in God’s Kingdom

 We can all invest in God’s Kingdom and the next generation, however young or old we may be, as we give our time, talent and treasure.

When we invest in others, we not only make a way for them to know God’s love, power and provision but God also promises to bless us as we partner with Him.

Jesus said: “Give, and it will be given to you. You will have more than enough. It can be pushed down and shaken together and it will still run over as it is given to you. The way you give to others is the way you will receive in return.” Luke 6:38 NLV

 One of the great ways we can invest in God’s Kingdom is to serve in God’s House. If you would like volunteer and serve on of our teams we would love to help you join a team. Click this link and we will be in touch with you.

Serving in God’s house is one of the most enriching and rewarding things you can do!

One Nation Under God

Hi Newport Church Family,


We trust that you are in good health and spirit and experiencing God’s grace, favor and provision.

Happy 4th July to you all! 

We hope that you enjoyed our Friday evening service, which we moved from Sunday so that we could worship together on Friday and gather with family and friends on Sunday morning.

We pray that you have a blessed time together this weekend as we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as one nation under God.

 

A Declaration of Independence and of Dependence on God

This week, while on vacation with our family, I was able to visit the site of the Battle of Yorktown, with our daughter London, and to stand on the field where the British Army surrendered to the American Revolutionary Army led by George Washington.

The British surrender on October 19th 1781 marked the end of the war, and the beginnings of the negotiation of the terms of surrender, which meant that the thirteen colonies would no longer be subject to the English monarch George III and were now united, free and independent states.

America’s independence which had been declared on July 4th, 1776 had now been secured after four hard fought years of struggle for Independence.

The declaration that the United States would be one nation under God, where all men would be equal could now become a reality with new found Independence from the yoke of British rule.

 

One Nation Under God

As we stood on the field I thought about the significance of that moment and how at the heart of the Declaration of Independence was not only a struggle for Independence but a desire for a nation to be birthed that would be dependent on God.

Benjamin Franklin spoke these significant words as he reflected on those days, “In the beginning of the contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had our daily prayer. . . . Our prayers, sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor. . . . I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? I believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed no better than the builders of Babel. We shall be divided by our partial, local interests; our projects will be confounded. . . . I move that we pray.”

The author was Benjamin Franklin, the chairman of the Constitutional Congress was George Washington, the motion was passed and prayers were said then and at subsequent meetings. 

There is no doubt that the secret of the greatness of our nation has been dependence on the sovereignty of God. 

May that be our prayer for our nation this Fourth July and for our church and community!

 

A Spirit of Generosity 

One of the hallmarks of the greatness of any nation is a spirit of generosity. A nation under God and dependent on God will always have a spirit of generosity and we are all beneficiaries of living in a nation that has a spirit and culture of generosity.

Generosity is at the heart of the gospel and as those who have received a spirit of generosity our response is to freely give just as we have freely received.

As a church may we continue to exemplify that spirt of generosity as we live in dependence on God and continue to build a hub of hope and faith.

A big thank you to all who have contributed to our recent miracle offering and to those who faithfully give, so that we can make a way for others to know God’s love, grace and provision.

Importance and Power of Honor and Gratitude

Hi Newport Church Family,


We pray that you all had a great Father’s Day and had an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. 

We are so thankful that Jesus came to reveal our heavenly Father and make it possible for us to experience God’s love, grace and acceptance through the sacrifice He made for us all.

 

The Importance and Power of Honor and Gratitude

As I prepared for last Sunday’s Father’s day message, and read once again the parable of the prodigal son, the position of the two sons both at the beginning and end of the story stood out to me in sharp contrast.

The contrast of being lost and found, dead and alive and the importance and power of honor and gratitude as opposed to dishonor and familiarity.

At the beginning of the story the younger son dishonors his father, asks for his inheritance and leaves home on a journey destined for disaster.

The older son stays at home but is silent. He shows no effort to plead with his brother to refrain from dishonoring his father and bringing shame on the family.

One brother strayed, the other brother stayed. One brother was vocal the other brother was silent. One brother is lost, the other brother is seemingly found and in his rightful place at home.

Jesus paints the picture that it was not just one brother who was lost, but in fact both brothers were lost, one away from home and one at home. He also revealed how both brothers showed dishonor and familiarity in their attitude to their father and each other.

As the story progresses the younger son comes to his senses, turns homeward and is welcomed home in the open arms of His forgiving father.

The son who was lost is now found, dishonor is replaced with honor, and familiarity with gratitude as the younger son humbles himself before his father.

And as he is welcomed home the door to all that is in his father’s house is opened to him.

By contrast the son who stayed, despite his father’s pleading, dishonors his father in an attitude of familiarity, refusing to accept and celebrate his brother’s return.  

The brother who stayed is left standing at the door, lost outside, while the brother who strayed is found inside, celebrating that he is home with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. 

Jesus uses the contrast between the two sons to powerfully demonstrate the fruit of both honor and dishonor, familiarity and gratitude.

As we move into the second half of this year, let’s make sure that we never underestimate the power of familiarity to creep into our lives and rob us of all that God has for us. At the same time let’s remember the powerful truth within this story that honor and gratitude are keys to opening the door to Gods very best.

 Familiarity is the forerunner of dishonor just as gratitude paves the way for honor, and wherever we find honor and gratitude, God’s miraculous power and provision are always revealed!

 

July 4th Sunday Service is Moving to Friday July 2nd 7.00 to 8pm

On the weekend of 4th of July we will be holding our weekend service on Friday July 2nd from 7.00 to 8pm.

Generosity and the Promises of God

The Bible is filled with thousands of promises to those who honor God and His Word.

Many of these promise are connected to our generosity, revealing that generosity opens the door to God’s promises.

We encourage you to take time read God’s promises, and remind Him of them as you give your donations, tithes and offerings, just as a child would remind their parent of the promises they have made.

I particularly love this promise from the book of Numbers 23:19, and I quote it often as I pray and remind God of His faithful promises.

 

God is not a man, so he does not lie.
    He is not human, so he does not change his mind.
Has he ever spoken and failed to act?
    Has he ever promised and not carried it through?

 

God will do what He says He will do, so lets read His promises, believe His promises, thank Him for His promises and remind Him of promises.

The Father’s Heart

Hi Newport Church Family,


We trust you are well and experiencing God’s grace, favor and presence.

It’s Father’s Day this Sunday, so a big Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads both natural and spiritual!

We will be having a special kids presentation this Sunday and a tribute to the Dads which you will not want to miss! We also have a father’s day gift,  for all of the men in the house that you can enjoy with a great hand crafted coffee!

 

The Father’s Heart

The very last promise and last verse of the Old testament is, “he will turn

the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” Malachi 4:6

From the very moment Adam and Eve fell in the garden, God who reveals Himself through all of time as our heavenly Father, has been at work turning our hearts to Him, and to the hearts of our earthly fathers.

When Adam and Eve sinned in the garden God unfolded his architectural plans for the restoration of our relationship with Him.

 God embarked on a building program, the cornerstone and capstone of which is Jesus.

Jesus is the image of His Father, the exact representation of His being and the visible expression of the invisible God.

When Philip said to Jesus, “Lord show us the Father,” Jesus replied, “if you've seen Me you've seen the Father.”

The one story that Jesus told which exemplifies the heart of our heavenly Father more than any other is the story of the two sons, one who strayed from home and the other who stayed at home.

At the heart of the story is the disconnect of both sons from their father and the father’s desire to see them both restored to relationship with him.

In the end the son who turned to his father, despite the depth of his brokenness and sin, was the one who was restored. However the son who stayed at home with a hard and resentful heart was left standing at the door when the celebration of his brother’s return was taking place. 

The story reveals like none other the intense desire of the father to be reunited with his sons and how that took place at the very moment the younger son turned towards his father.

Our prayer this father’s day is that, whatever our relationship may be or have been with our heavenly or earthly father, our hearts would be continually turned towards our father in heaven and to our fathers here on earth. 

And as we do, may we see blessing and healing in our world.

 

Our Generous Father

God so loved the world that he gave His only Son Jesus, so that we could be restored to relationship with Him and know His love, peace, protection and provision.

Each one of us has the opportunity to do for others what God did for us.

God created us in His image, both to receive and to give. When we give of ourselves, whether it’s our time, our talent, or our finance, we are expressing the very nature of God.

As we do this as together, each one of us doing our part, we are making a way for others to be restored to their heavenly Father just as we have and to know His love, peace protection and provision.

Every Season brings New Growth

Hi Newport Church Family,

We hope that you are in good health and spirit and experiencing God’s presence and favor in ever increasing ways. 

It’s graduation season, so a big congratulations to all graduating students and families, who have navigated a particularly difficult year of studies. We are praying for each one of you, believing that God will give you great hope, expectation and favor in this new season.

 

Every Season brings New Growth

God said to Noah, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”

This was God’s promise after the flood, and we are all beneficiaries of that promise.

With every season there are new opportunities to learn and grow. Just as each new school year brings new lessons, every season of life brings new lessons.

Seedtime, harvest, cold and heat all bring new experiences that we can learn from.

As we emerge from a season in which COVID-19 has been at the forefront of our conversation, what lessons have we learned that we can take with us into this new season?

What a great time to pause and reflect on what we have learned, so that we can come out of this season better and stronger as individuals and as a church.

 

The Call to Draw Closer to God

The song of Solomon, is a poem describing Solomon’s love for his bride while being allegory of God’s love for us, and our love for Him.

In his poem Solomon writes: 

 

My beloved spoke, and said to me:
“Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away.
For lo, the winter is past,
The rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth;
The time of singing has come,
And the voice of the turtledove
Is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth her green figs,
And the vines with the tender grapes
Give a good smell.
Rise up, my love, my fair one,
And come away!

 

The winter is over, summer is here and God is calling us to draw closer to Him, and to know His Presence in ever great ways.

 

The Communion of Saints

In our church foyer the words of the Apostles Creed are framed on the wall.

These words are the words that frame what we believe as followers of Christ.

 

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day He rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic (universal) Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Over recent weeks I have been declaring this creed in my daily prayer and every time I do they cause faith to rise in my heart.

One declaration that has stood out to me in it’s relevance to this season is, “I believe in the communion of saints”.

My prayer, as we emerge from this winter season, is that our belief in the communion of saints, the gathering, corporate worship, presence of God’s people together, will not diminish but will increase.

The winter is over, summer is here and God is calling us to draw closer to Him and to each other through the communion of saints. 

Let’s learn from the lessons of this last season, and draw closer to God and to each other, so that His Kingdom will come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The Miracle is in the Seed

Hi Newport Church Family,

We trust that you are well an in good health and spirit. 

May has been a month in which we have been praying and believing for Miracles, and we look forward to hearing all that God has done and will continue to do in the days ahead.

The Miracle is in the Seed

Every year at the end of May we have given a miracle offering, which is seed that we sow in faith, believing that God will cause it to bring new life to people locally and globally and that He will multiply the seed that we sow so that we can continue to be generous on every occasion.

As we prepare our hearts, I am reminded of the powerful truth that the miracle of new life and multiplication is found in every seed.

Within every seed lies the potential for a miraculous harvest.

Within an acorn lies the potential of not only a huge oak tree but a forest of oak trees. Each tree produces over 2,000 acorns every year and can live for over 150 years, which means one acorn will be multiplied over the life of the tree to produce over 300,000 acorns!

Each one of those acorns has the potential to produce another tree which can produce another tree until a forest of oak trees has grown producing billions of acorns.

That is the potential and miracle that lies within every seed!

Jesus, speaking about faith and miracles, said that the mustard seed which is the smallest of seeds grows into the largest of trees and the birds of the air come and take refuge in it.

 Jesus’ analogy highlights what sowing our seed in faith can achieve. Each one of us can bring great hope, refuge and meaningful community through our generosity.

 

Building a Storehouse and Legacy of Hope and Faith

Our vision has always been to be a storehouse, where we have food in our house that can feed people spiritually, emotionally and physically.

The seed we sow makes it possible to have food in our house for greater impact, greater reach and to meet the ever greater needs around us.

Joseph had a vision of building storehouses in Egypt which became the means by which he not only fed a nation but also the surrounding nations during a time of extreme famine.

Joseph may be remembered most for his dreams, but his most enduring and lasting legacy was very simply that he realized the power of a storehouse and built storehouses that saved millions of people from starvation and death in the midst of famine.

Our prayer is that we might increasingly become a storehouse of hope and faith and leave a legacy for future generations just as previous generations have left for us.

 

Sowing our Seed in the Morning

Tomorrow morning as we worship and honor God we will have the opportunity to sow our seed, which has within it miraculous potential.

We will also be showing an inspiring video which highlights some of the things that your generosity has made possible in our church, our community and overseas.

Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 11:6, “In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand.”

We pray that as we do that in faith, God will supernaturally multiply the seed we sow and bring new life and blessing to many.

Miracle May - We can be the Answer to someone else’s Miracle

Hi Newport Church Family,

We hope you’re doing well and experiencing great grace and favor. 

It’s Miracle May and we are praying for Miracles in our house, our neighbors house and God’s house.

As we ask in faith and believe for miracles, each one of us also has the God given opportunity and privilege of being used by God to be the answer to someone else’s prayer for a miracle.

Whether it’s showing up at the precise moment someone needs to be rescued, being present during a time of great distress or being the provision for any kind of need, we can be the answer to someone’s miracle.

This year we have been present in the lives of children, in the most difficult of circumstances in India, through our partnership with Vision Rescue.

This week we received a report on what our support has made possible.


Here is Aayan’s story which is just one of the many stories of those who’s cry for a miracle was answered.

Our staff quickly connected Aayan to a partner hospital, and the doctors diagnosed him with tuberculosis. Aayan’s health was deteriorating fast. He was kept on a liquid diet.

Strong and determined, Aayan recovered from his illness and is now back home. Our team continued to support his recovery even after he left the hospital.  

Aayan lives in one the poorest slum communities in Mumbai with his father, mother, step-mother and two siblings. When Aayan came to our Beacon Learning Centre, he didn’t know much about healthy hygiene practices. He was routinely covered in dirt from playing with his friends on the street, and he used to come to class that way.

Over time, our community workers were able to counsel Aayan’s parents on the importance of personal hygiene, and they started sending him to school neat and clean.

Gradually, Aayan became everyone’s favourite and he became one of the most active students in class.

His mother too grew in civic awareness along with him. She joined our focus group meetings for parents and participated in our medical camps.

When the pandemic hit, Aayan’s education came to a halt. All face-to-face classes at Vision Rescue were stalled, and Aayan’s family didn’t own a smartphone for him to study online. With his father’s job gone, they were struggling to even put food on the table.

That’s when you stepped in with emergency help. Groceries were sent to Aayan’s family every month from our office and an education representative was sent to teach Aayan at home.

Today, he’s so glad to be healthy, happy and studying again.

Our Miracle Offering on June 6th will give us an opportunity to continue to be a hub of hope and faith for our community and beyond.

Miracle May - Our Declaration Precedes God's Demonstration

Hi Newport Church Family,

We hope you had a faith-filled week and are experiencing God’s presence, provision, and favor.

It’s Miracle May and this month we have a special focus on God’s ability and willingness to move miraculously in our house, our neighbor’s house, and God’s house. Let’s believe together for God to do extraordinary things!

Our Declaration Precedes God’s Demonstration

In his gospel, John records 7 Divine Declarations and 7 Miraculous Demonstrations of Jesus. 

The structure of the book gives a clear pattern to follow as we believe God for miracles.

The pattern is this, “Declaration precedes Demonstration.”

The 7 Declarations in the gospel of John are the “I AM” statements of Jesus, all of which are declarations of His identity. 

I AM is the name that God gave to Moses when He called him to return to Egypt and lead Israel out of captivity.

Jesus said,
“ I AM the Bread of Life, I AM The Light of the World, I AM The Door of the Sheep, I AM The Good Shepherd, I AM the Resurrection and the Life, I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life and I AM the True Vine.”

Having declared His identity, Jesus then demonstrated His authority and power. 

He turned water into wine, healed the nobleman’s son, healed the paralyzed man at the Pool of Bethesda, fed the five thousand, walked on water, opened the eyes of the man born blind, and raised Lazarus from the dead.                                           

In this way, John reveals a divine pattern for knowing God’s power at work in our lives. 

John goes on to tell us the purpose of his account of Jesus’ ministry.

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:30-31 NKJV

He wrote that we might believe and it’s our belief that makes way for God to move miraculously.

Time and again Jesus said, “do you believe that I can do this?” before He performed a miracle.

Jesus also said, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

How important it is that we believe that God can do what we are asking Him to do.

As people believed, each one of Jesus’ miracles recorded in John’s gospel brought about a unique transformation.

From
Sadness to Gladness
Disease to Health
Paralysis to Movement
Hunger to Fullness
Turbulence to Tranquility
Darkness to Light
Death to Life

John gives us a clear pattern to follow as we believe God for miracles. 

Our declaration of who God is, and our belief will release a demonstration of His authority and power.

May our declaration precede God’s demonstration in Jesus name!

The Miraculous Catch   

The final miracle recorded in John’s gospel is the miraculous catch of 153 fish after the disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. 

Like so many other miracles, the disciples needed to do something before the miracle could take place.

In this case it was to do what Jesus told them to do and cast their net onto the other side of the boat. In the multiplication of the loaves and fish which fed over five thousand people it required a boy to giving his lunch of bread and fish to Jesus.

This pattern is found throughout the Bible. Miracles happen when we do what God asks us to do and when we participate in the process of the miracle, rather than just waiting for a miracle to happen.

God says, “ask, seek, knock, sow, give, step out in faith, launch out into the deep, step out of the boat, cast your net on the other side of the boat…..”

In the same way, as we declare who God is and believe for a demonstration of His power and authority, let’s prime the pump for the miracle to happen by being careful to do what God says and participating in the process.

Jesus communicated this supernatural kingdom principle when He said:

“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
Luke 6:38 NLT

Miracles in our Finances

There is no doubt that we would all like to see God work miraculously in our finances! The truth is that God is not only willing but able to do so.

God outlines very clearly in His word how we can experience supernatural provision and multiplication.

God says:
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Malachi 3:10 NIV

Paul writes to the Corinthian church that God gives seed to those who sow and promises that He Himself will multiply the seed we sow.

This month of Miracles let’s believe for financial miracles in our house and in God’s house

This is a very important offering for us as a church and we are believing for supernatural provision for God’s house and your house.

Mothers Day Weekend

Hi Newport Church Family,

We hope you had a faith-filled week and are experiencing new measures of God’s grace.

Happy Miracle May and Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Moms both natural and spiritual!

We are so thankful for you all and will be taking time to honor you and give you a special gift this Sunday. We hope that you can join us for what will be a great morning together.

Mother’s Day Miracle Sunday! 

Mother’s day is a day when we honor our Moms and gather together as families. It’s Miracle May and as we gather this Sunday let’s believe for miracles in our families and in our church family.

One of the greatest miracles ever was the birth of Jesus, God’s Son, into an earthly family with a human mother. God sent His Son, the Savior of the World, from heaven to earth in the form of a baby. Jesus was both God and man and grew up in a family with a mother, a stepfather, brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces, and an extensive family.

Jesus experienced the joys, the fun, the struggles and sorrows of family life, along with the loss of family members which included His stepfather Joseph at some time after Jesus’ twelfth birthday.

Although Jesus was perfect, His family like any other family was imperfect. The writers of the gospel identify James, Joseph, Jude, and Simon as His brothers along with His sisters. As siblings, Jesus’ brothers and sisters would have had the normal squabbles and arguments that all brothers and sisters do. They also would no doubt have struggled to come to terms with Jesus’ perfection. Why did He never get into trouble when they did all the time?!

Without question, Jesus’ brothers and sisters knew that he was no ordinary child or man, but they didn’t believe that He was the Messiah until after His resurrection.

Because Jesus grew up in a family He identifies with all of the aspects of our joys and sorrows, highs and lows of family life. So we are eternally thankful for Jesus, who was a part of a family here on earth, being very present in every aspect of our family life

On Mother’s day, we think about family probably more than any other day because mothers nurture and raise us as children, making our house a home and filling our home with love. 

This past week Pastor Di’s Mum went to be with Jesus and her heavenly home after several years of battling leukemia. She was a daughter, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend to many, including those who got to know her on her many visits to us here in California.

She loved greatly, was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

We are so thankful for the hope and assurance that we have of eternity with Jesus and our loved ones in heaven, and we know that she will be greeted by Jesus with the words, “well done good and faithful servant.”

We were not able to visit Australia and be with Pastor Di’s Mum due to international COVID restrictions on travel, and this has made her passing even harder.  Please pray for Pastor  Di and our family both here and in Sydney, where her Dad, sister, and niece have been caring for her.

We are so thankful for God’s grace, for the love and support of family and friends, and for the hope and assurance we have in Jesus of one day being together for eternity in heaven.

Let’s keep believing for miracles in our families, whether it’s for family members who don’t know Jesus, for healing physically, restoration relationally, provision financially, or any other thing. God is both able and willing!

Kingdom Builders, Vision Partners and Givers

Last Saturday on the first day of Miracle May, we gathered with our kingdom builders and vision partners and I spoke about how we can experience Miracles in our Finances. It was a faith-filled morning and we had a great time together.

I’m sure every one of us would welcome a financial miracle this month and year!

Let’s never forget every miracle that happened in the bible was preceded by an act of faith.

Giving is like sowing a seed, which leaves our hand, goes into the ground, and germinates before springing up and producing multiplied seed for eating and further sowing.

Let’s sow our miracle seed and believe for a miraculous multiplication of what we sow.

It's Miracle May!


Hi Newport Church Family,


We hope that you are in good health and spirit.

 

It’s Miracle May!

Today is the first day of May and marks the beginning of a month when as a church we focus on God’s miraculous power and ability to move in extraordinary ways in our lives and world.

We encourage you at the start of this month to pray and believe with us that God will do extraordinary things and move in supernatural ways in our lives, our neighbors lives and our church.

We have a special miracle card which we will be making available at church and online at newportchurch.com/miraclemay. Take some time to fill it out and write down specifically what you are asking and believing that God will do.

Join us as we pray and believe together with faith, expectation and confidence in God’s ability to do above and beyond all that we could ever ask or imagine.

 

God is Able and Willing

Let’s never forget that God is not only able but He is willing!

One of the great examples of this is the found in the story of the man with an advanced case of leprosy, who Jesus healed:

A man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus, begging to be healed. “If you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean,” he said. Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” Instantly the leprosy disappeared, and the man was healed. Mark 1:40-42 NLT

This man knew that Jesus was able to heal him because he had heard and seen many of the miracles that Jesus had performed, but what he didn’t know was whether or not Jesus was willing to heal.

When Jesus said, “I am willing”, He was saying those powerful and profound words not only to this man, but to anyone who comes to Jesus believing that He is able to do what we ask Him to do.

God is not only able, He is willing!

Focus Releases Faith

This story also highlights the power of focus. This man was totally focused on Jesus, so much so that he bowed to the ground on his knees begging that Jesus would heal him.

Jesus was moved with great compassion and healed him.

Very often when people came to Jesus asking to be healed, Jesus asked them to look at Him.

Jesus did this because He knew that focus on Him would release faith in them and they would be healed.

The key to our miracle is not found in focusing on what we want Jesus to do, but in focusing on Him, the One who is willing and able to do what we are asking of Him!

When we focus on Jesus, faith will rise in our hearts in the same way that it did in Peter’s heart when he focused on Jesus and walked on water! 

Let’s focus on Jesus with renewed expectation this month, and may faith rise in our hearts so that we see God work in extraordinary ways!

Miracles in our Finances

There is no doubt that we would all like to see God work miraculously in our finances! The truth is that God is not only willing but able to do so.

God outlines very clearly in His word how we can experience supernatural provision and multiplication.

God says:

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Malachi 3:10 NIV

Paul writes to the Corinthian church that God gives seed to those who sow and promises that He Himself will multiply the seed we sow.

At the beginning of this month of Miracles let’s believe for financial miracles in our house and in God’s house.

If you have never put God to the test by taking Him up on His challenge to tithe, what a great month to do so.

The Path that Leads to Real Success


Hi Newport Church Family,


We pray that you are in good health and that you are prospering in all things, just as your soul prospers.

The Path that Leads to Real Success

In his third letter, the Apostle John writes to Gaius, who was an otherwise unknown member of a local church, commending him for his hospitality and generosity.

John opens his letter with these words:

“The Elder, 

To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

John’s greeting and prayer highlight the powerful truth that when our soul is prospering, we prosper!

The Greek word that John uses for “prosper” is euodóō, and is derived from two words; , meaning "well or good" and hodós, meaning “a way, road, journey or path.”

The literal meaning of the word is: to go on a prosperous journey; (figuratively) to be on the right (profitablepath, i.e. leading to real success (good fortune) where someone truly "prospers, is prospered"

What John is saying is, that when our soul is prospering, it sets us on a path and journey that leads to true prosperity in every area of our lives.

Our soul is the key to setting us on that path and journey of prosperity.

This is why God’s word has so much to say about guarding our hearts, about setting our minds on those things that are above and about focusing on those things that will cause God’s presence and peace to fill our soul.

 

Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. Philippians 4:8 Amp

 

When we guard our heart and mind and fill them with God’s word, our soul will prosper and we will journey on a road of blessing and true prosperity. 

This truth is expressed in Psalm 84:5:

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.”

 

Let’s never forget that it’s what’s happening in us rather than around us that is most important. As our soul prospers and we set our hearts on God we are on the path to true health and prosperity.

We will prosper even as our soul prospers!

 

Hospitality and Generosity make our Faith Visible

In his letter John not only commends Gaius for his hospitality and generosity, but he also encourages him to continue to support the work of the Lord.

Dear friend, when you extend hospitality to Christian brothers and sisters, even when they are strangers, you make the faith visible. They’ve made a full report back to the church here, a message about your love. It’s good work you’re doing, helping these travelers on their way, hospitality worthy of God himself! They set out under the banner of the Name, and get no help from unbelievers. So they deserve any support we can give them. In providing meals and a bed, we become their companions in spreading the Truth. 3 John 5-8 Message

John reminds and encourages us that our hospitality and generosity is not only a “good work”, but that through it we “become companions in spreading the truth.”

We have the privilege of partnering with God in building His church and His Kingdom.

John wrote that hospitality and generosity “make the faith visible.”

Thank you for making our faith visible through your hospitality and generosity, without it we would not be able to be a visible hub of hope and faith to our community and beyond.

Kingdom Builders and Vision Partners Breakfast Next Saturday May 1st at 9am 

We are very excited to be holding our first Kingdom Builders and Vision Partners breakfast for 2021 next Saturday May 1st.

Our Kingdom Builders and Vision Partners are people who understand the power of generosity and have a desire to lead the way in resourcing the church through their giving.

We meet for breakfast several times a year to encourage, inspire and connect with people who are passionate about building the church.

Jesus’ Infallible Proofs and Unquestionable Demonstrations


Hi Newport Church Family,


We hope that you had a happy and blessed Easter.

 What a great weekend we had together as a church, as we celebrated the death and resurrection of Jesus in our Good Friday and Easter Sunday English and Spanish services.

 

Jesus’ Infallible Proofs and Unquestionable Demonstrations

Luke writes in the first chapter of the book of Acts that Jesus appeared to the disciples proving the reality and power of His resurrection over a period of forty days:

 

“To these [men] He also showed Himself alive after His suffering [in Gethsemane and on the cross], by [a series of] many infallible proofs and unquestionable demonstrations, appearing to them over a period of forty days and talking to them about the things concerning the kingdom of God.”

Paul wrote in his letter to the Corinthians that during the forty days between Jesus resurrection and ascension into heaven He appeared to more than five hundred people at one time. 

There was no doubt about the reality of Jesus’ resurrection because it was established through many infallible proofs and unquestionable demonstrations!

It’s important to note Jesus revealed Himself specifically to those who made Him the focus of their attention and devotion.

In these coming days let’s renew our focus on Jesus with ever greater devotion, and invite Him to release His resurrection life in us and in our church with many unquestionable demonstrations of His power!

Let’s also pray that just as Jesus brought new understanding and fresh revelation of God’s kingdom to His disciples at that time, we too will grow in our understanding and revelation of God’s kingdom purpose for our time.

  

Grace, Grace and more Grace!

Zechariah prophesied about the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, that had been in ruins for so many years, with these words:

‘Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ Zech 4:7

 

The rebuilding of the Temple required great grace and as we rebuild as a church after a year of COVID restrictions we need grace, grace and more grace!

Orange County is now in the orange tier of restrictions, which means that as a church we can now operate at fifty percent capacity, and current projections indicate that by June California will be fully open.

We have always said as a church, “find your place at your own pace.”

As more and more people return to in person church attendance, let’s all of us do so with great grace, knowing that we all have different levels of comfort regarding regathering.

We encourage you to join us in person if you can and of course we will continue to live stream our services on YouTube.

Let’s keep praying and believing for a season of new life and great growth!

On the Third Day He Rose Again…


Hi Newport Church Family,


Happy Easter! We pray that your Easter is filled with love, hope and every blessing as you gather with your family and friends.

 

On the Third Day He Rose Again…

As we remember and celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus, the words of the Apostles Creed which have been timelessly declared over the centuries, powerfully encapsulate the meaning of these three days.

 

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. 

Amen.

These words articulate the essence, mystery and wonder of our faith. This weekend we are celebrating that Jesus died for the forgiveness of our sins and rose from the dead so that we could experience His resurrection power and everlasting life.

And because of the events of these three days, all of the promises of God through Jesus are Yes and Amen!

This Easter let’s gather and celebrate what Jesus did for us and declare to our world the love and grace of God that is demonstrated through the power of the cross, and Jesus’ Resurrection on the third day.


Easter Sunday Service – NEW SERVICE TIME 10am

On the Sunday morning, three days after His crucifixion, Jesus’ followers went early to the tomb where Jesus had been lain. What they found was an empty tomb and two angels standing by saying, “why do you seek the living among the dead, He is not here but He is Risen!”

In the same way this Resurrection Sunday we can go to God’s House and celebrate the empty tomb that changed everything for every one of us forever!

At our new Sunday morning service time of 10am, we’re going to continue with our theme of “Till the End of Time” and we’re praying and believing that people will experience God’s presence, peace and power in an unprecedented way as we worship together.

Let’s do everything we can not only to be there ourselves but to invite our family and friends. Here is a link with an invitation you can send to the people in your world. 


Easter Spanish Speaking Service – 12pm 

Our monthly Spanish service will be held this Sunday and we encourage you to invite all of the Spanish speakers in your world to come to this special Easter service. Check  it out here!

 

The Greatest Gift of All 

God gave us the greatest gift of all by sending His Son Jesus, who gave Himself for us as a perfect sacrifice and offering.

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. 2 Cor 5:21 

I will never forget how the realization of those words transformed my life forever because someone took the time to invite and take me to church, others gave their finance that made it possible for the church to be there and then those who gave their talents to serve in God’s house.

Let’s do for others what others have done for us so that our world can know the true hope of Easter through our generosity.

Till the End of Time

Hi Newport Church Family,

We trust you are well and experiencing God’s grace and favor.

The Journey of Easter
This week, along with  Christians all over the world, we are remembering the most significant week in human history. Along with the day of Jesus’ birth, the events of the week between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday are the pivotal moments in God’s redemptive plan to rescue humankind and restore our relationship with Him.

Till the End of Time

As we focus on these events, Jesus’ Triumphal entry into Jerusalem, His crucifixion, death and resurrection our theme will be, “Till the end of time”.

Jesus’ promised His disciples that He would be with us always till the end of time.

As we celebrate the highs and lows of the Journey of Easter, we are excited about the opportunity we have as a church to gather together and experience God’s presence and the reality of Jesus’ promise that He will be with us until the end of time.

We would love to have you join us in person and for you to invite and bring your family and friends for all three of our Easter services.

Palm Sunday – 11am 

Good Friday – 7pm One hour worship, communion and message

Easter Sunday -  10am English, 12pm Spanish

Our Sunday morning service times will be changing from 11am to 10am, starting on Easter Sunday April 4th.

We are looking forward to welcoming all of you who have been watching online and are ready to gather in person as things open up and we enter this new spring season.

This is How we Know Love!

John 3:16 is one of the best known and most quoted bible verses.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. NLT

The Apostle John, who wrote these words, echoes this verse many years after Jesus’ death and resurrection in his letters to the early church.  Interestingly, and I believe uncoincidentally, the chapter and verse are identical and the message the same.

This is how we know love: Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. I John 3:16 CEB

This is how we know love, God gave His Son, and we show our love by giving our lives to help others in the same way that Jesus gave Himself for us.

Let’s show our love to each other and to our world as Jesus did, through our time, talent and treasure, so that God’s kingdom of love will come and His will be done.

Our Time

One of the ways we do this is by giving some of your time to serve on one of our teams, either on Sunday or during the week.

All you need is a willing heart and we can find a place for you where you can enjoy the blessing of serving others. 

If you have some time on a Friday between 11.30 and 1.30pm, our Food with Love Team, who provide food for over 700 people every week, would love to have you join them. 

Our Talent

Every one of us has was born with a God-given talent and ability. Your unique gifts and talents can be used to create a place that is a hub of hope and faith to our community and beyond.

Whether its welcoming people, serving in our coffee shop, our kids church, our technical, media, worship or any other team, your time and talents make a difference. Let’s use them for the glory of God, bringing hope to others and enjoy the rewards both here and in heaven!

Our Treasure

Every one of us has something that we can give. Jesus made it clear that when we are giving, it’s not the size of our gift that God measures, but it’s the level of sacrifice involved.

Jesus watched as the people put their offerings into the temple offering box and when he saw a widow give two small copper coins He told His disciples, “this woman has given more than all the others put together, they contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had.”

All of us are the beneficiaries of what others have given, beginning with  Jesus, through every generation that gave and made sacrifices so that we could know and experience God’s love and grace.

Now it’s our turn to do our part and pave the way for others so that they can know the hope that we have received.

Praying at all Times 

Let’s keep praying for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done, and especially at this time, for healing for all those who have been affected by the recent tragic and senseless shootings in our nation.

The Journey of Easter

Hi Newport Church Family,

We pray that you are doing well and in good health and spirit.

 

Lifting of Restrictions from Purple to Red Tier

Last Sunday Orange County moved from purple tier COVID-19 restrictions to red tier status! As a result many businesses are now allowed to either resume or expand their activities.

Next month Disneyland will reopen, spectators will be allowed to attend sporting events, restaurants are open for indoor dining and of course churches can meet at 25% of their capacity.

This is good news for us all, and we would love to have you join us in person for our services leading up to Easter if you have not already been doing so. We have a full church program including kids church, and we’re doing everything we can to make your experience at church as safe as possible.

“Find your place at your own pace” is something that we have always said at Newport Church, and we encourage you to do so now as we continue to see progress in the ongoing resumption of church life across our state and nation.

 

The Journey of Easter                                                

We are now only two weeks away from Easter!  

As we focus on the events that took place on Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday we as the church proclaim the hope that is central to our faith.

Jesus came into a broken world to save us, and to restore our relationship with our Heavenly Father and each other, through His death and resurrection.

At such a time as this, when our world is so evidently broken in so many ways, the message of Jesus’ death and resurrection is needed as much as in any other time in history. 

Jesus came to establish a Kingdom of love not hate, unity not division and hope not despair.

For those of us who have experienced God’s love and grace, we have a story to tell, and someone somewhere needs to hear our story in this season. 

Easter is a time when people are more open to an invitation to come to church, and to hear our story, than at many other times.

I remember how I was invited by some friends to go to church with them on Easter Sunday, after they had shared their story of how Jesus had changed their lives. Their stories, along with that Resurrection Sunday service, set into a motion a sequence of questions and weeks of seeking that led me to the point where I had a life changing encounter with Jesus.

I will be forever grateful for their stories and for the invitation to that Easter Service. Who are we inviting to church this easter? There is no better time and it could change their life forever, just as it did mine!

We encourage you join us for all three of our services, as we follow the journey of Easter, and invite someone in your world to one of these services.

 

Palm Sunday

We begin the journey of Easter with our Palm Sunday service, when we will focus on the day that Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem, while the city of Jerusalem came out to proclaim Him as their Messiah.

 

Good Friday

On Good Friday evening we have a special one hour service, when we will worship, take communion together and reflect on all that Jesus did for us at Calvary.

 

Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday we are changing our weekly Sunday morning service time to 10am, with an English speaking service at 10am, and a Spanish speaking service at 11.45am!

Let’s celebrate the resurrection of Jesus together, and all that it means to us personally and to a world that needs to know the power of the resurrection in ever greater ways.

 

The Generosity of Easter

The journey of Easter is one of the greatest examples of God’s generosity toward each one of us.

Paul wrote to the Roman church, “God did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all.” Romans 8:32

He went on to say:

 

The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture…

None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us. Romans 8:34-39 Message

 

As we consider what Jesus did, let’s follow God’s example and give our best so that others can know God’s love, peace and presence this Easter.

As we give our time, talent and treasure we can make a way for others just as Jesus did by giving His life for us.

Rejoice, Pray, Give Thanks…..

In closing let’s remember and take to heart the words of Paul in his letter to the Thessalonian church:

 Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thess 5:16-18 NKJV

Last week the buds on the fig tree in our garden began to leaf and the first fruit of the season began to form. As I looked at our tree and welcomed the arrival of spring, I thought about these words of Jesus: 

“Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Luke 21:29-33 NKJV

Spring is here and with it the beginning of a new season. Jesus had much to say about seasons and in this parable, in which He talks about the last days, there are several important things to note about how to navigate the different seasons of life.

The Faithfulness and Constancy of God

“When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near”

Each new season reminds us of the faithfulness and constancy of God. Whatever may be happening in our world or may have happened throughout the passage of time, God’s faithfulness is exemplified in the constancy of the cycle of seasons.

God is faithful and whatever may be happening in our lives or world in any season, we can know His constant presence and hold onto the hope we have in Him.

Let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful. Hebrews 10:23

  

God’s Plan and Purpose is Continuing to Unfold

Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near” 

As the seasons come and go, God’s eternal plan continues to unfold and we, who have come to know Jesus, are invited at this very moment of time, to participate in the continuum of His purpose. Just as the sun rises every day bringing new opportunities with it, so does every new season.

When Jesus explained the meaning of the parable of the fig tree, He said, when uncertain times come, don’t fall asleep, stay alert and attentive and don’t be weighed down by the cares and distractions of this life.

As we enter this new season let’s learn from the parable of the fig tree and not fall asleep, but awaken to all that God wants to do both in our own lives and in our church.

 

Jesus’ Words will never Pass Away

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.”

Some things will change, some things will pass away but God’s Word will never change and never pass away. That is the confidence that we can have in God’s word and in his unfailing promises.

The same Word that spoke all of creation into being now brings hope to us, because God’s word never changes nor will it ever pass away.

And because of that the writer of the book of Hebrews said:

For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Heb 13:5-6 

God is faithful, His plan and purpose are coming to pass and His Word will never fail or pass away!

 

Daylight Saving 

Daylight saving starts this Sunday, so don’t forget to adjust accordingly and join us for a coffee before our service at 11am, or if you are watching online enjoy a coffee or tea at home before our service!

 

New Service Times Starting Easter Sunday April 4th

Starting on Easter Sunday we will be changing the time of our morning service from 11am to 10am. We will also be holding a special Easter Spanish Speaking Service that day at 11.45am!

Easter is a time when many people who don’t normally attend church will come to church, so let’s invite our family and friends and pray that God will open their hearts to the love of God through the power of the Easter story. 

 

For God so loved the world that He Gave….

It was God’s immeasurable generosity that brought Jesus to our world.

Paul said, “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will He not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32

God demonstrates His great love for us in that there is no good thing that He withholds from those who love Him.

Let’s do through our generosity, for our community and world, what God did for us through His generosity. When we do, this is what God promises He will do:  

God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, 

“They share freely and give generously to the poor.
    Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”

 For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you.

Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous.  2 Cor 9:6-11 NLT
